A SMALL DREAM IN RED
Voice and Saxophone Duet, respectively: Nora McCarthy and Jorge Sylvester, acknowledges a deep affinity to Wassily Kandinsky - the artistic pioneer whose quintessential goal was to achieve the unique immediacy of music in abstract visual form. Incredibly, Nora and Jorge have achieved, in their duo performances, an innovative form of musical expression comparable in impact to Kandinsky's paintings, wherein each work reveals a self-contained world of content, form, improvisation, and - above all - balance.A Small Dream In Red debuted at the Knitting Factory in NYC on September 10, 2001 and conducts performances and workshops worldwide.(http://www.myspace.com/asmalldreaminred)
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE:
The presentation will consist of original compositions written specifically for voice and saxophone, poetry, standard deconstructions, slide presentation by photographer Fernando Natalici and featuring “Piano Jazz" a composition and poem written for sculptor Steven Dono’s large construction.
Arts for Art, INC (AFA) and The Local 269 have starting a Vocal Series called The Evolving Voice. The series aims to put left-of-center vocal music on the map and intends to showcase creative and conceptual vocalists performing original and improvised music including standards with a twist. The weekly series takes place on Tuesdays at the Local 269 featuring two vocalists per night, performing one set each.

A SMALL DREAM IN RED, respectively: Nora McCarthy and Jorge Sylvester, acknowledge a deep affinity to Wassily Kandinsky—the artistic pioneer whose quintessential goal was to achieve the unique immediacy of music in abstract visual form. Incredibly, Nora and Jorge have achieved, in their duo performances, an innovative form of musical expression comparable in impact to Kandinsky’s paintings, wherein each work reveals a self-contained world of content, form, improvisation, and—above all—balance.
Modernity as exemplified by Kandinsky and Monk is distinguished by a striking clarity of expression focused in the present moment. This clarity and presence is the ideal to which Nora McCarthy and Jorge Sylvester have aspired in their duo, A SMALL DREAM IN RED. The abstract dimension of these artists’ work, often misunderstood as a stylistic choice, is a necessary key to the focused “Now!” at the heart of their work. Abstraction enables a clear distinction between the essential and the superfluous, and so can serve as a catalyst for powerful artistic expression.

Known as the "jazz corner of Sugar Hill," the legendary St. Nick's Pub is a hot spot every night of the week. Jazz greats of the Charlie Parker variety have performed and recorded here, and you never know what current jazz luminaries will show up.
• 737 St. Nicholas Ave. at 149th Street, 212-283-9728
Take the A Train to 145 and follow the soul to 149th. I'll be performing with the amazing trumpeter Melvin Vines and his quartet, featuring Chip Crawford on piano from 10pm till 3am for the die hard jazzers, a mixture of originals and straight unchased standards. This is a Tuesday night event so be prepared to have the most fun you've ever had you'll think it's a Saturday night. Meet the gang and hang - you'll love the vibe cuz it's REAL AS IT GETS.
I had a fabulous time, fantastic musicians, ie, Melvin Vines - trumpet - he sounded like a free & funky, futuristic MD, beautiful soung....Chip Crawford on keys, harmonics and ideas out of the creative encyclopedia.....Ronnie Williams on drums - the maestro of rhythm and the incredible Tim Perriman on TBone - sweet and tasteful. Some of the greatest musicians that play today were in the audience, luminaries on the jazz stage, the one and only Frank Lacy - the King of the TBone, Dennis Davis - the Groove Master - drummer renowned, Bill Saxton swung by, and the special treat - The Man Olu Dara spread the wisdom by gracing the stage with his knowledge and style. Lastly, the master improviser himself, the amazing alto saxophonist Jorge Sylvester took the music to the outer limits. The joint was packed all night with a beautiful festive group of wonderful people who were definitely diggin the music. Many thanks to the St. Nick's Pub, Nelson, Vincent, Neville and the rest of the gang for a memorable night and a special thank you to two of the most charming divas on earth - sister Sarah James (phenom singer, poet) and sister Jolene Wu - compelling spiritual connector. Peace Everyone.
